I'm not sure what part of California that you visit, but you can try going to a bookstore Kinokuniya Japan city San Francisco or San Jose. They have sections with pictures of anime. Here are some of the addresses of some shops. I have not been in a store in San José, Santa Clara o Angeles, so I can not say if they have a good selection of figures or not. You will need to review their web sites or just take a chance and see if it is in the neighborhood. Good luck!
