What makes a public figure a good feminist role model?
For instance, is Madonna a feminist role model? How about Hillary Clinton? Jennifer Lopez? Martha Stewart? All of these women have taken their careers into their own hands and have carved out their own identities.
And, if none of the above strike you as particularly feminist, name someone you think IS a feminist role model. Why do you feel this way? What defines a feminist?
I’m probably a lot older than you are. My feminist role model was Gloria Steinem. She is smart, savvy, and sarcastic. She had a rough childhood, managed to thrive in spite of it, survived breast cancer, and wasn’t afraid to walk the walk, not just talk the talk.
I also admire Charlotte Bunch. She founded the Center for Women’s Global Leadership, she didn’t focus just on “US feminism or US women”.
I’ve admire Bernice Johnson Reagon, and her work with Sweet Honey in the Rock. Their music is extremely inspirational and she is very active with the Civil Rights Movement.
I think Rita Mae Brown is a hilarious writer. I especially loved her early books that were set in the south.
Of more recent feminists, I think Ani DiFranco is amazing. She started her own record company so she didn’t have to be censored or controlled. And her music is awesome!
Urvashi Vaid was still pretty young when she ran the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and she did a tremendous job.
