Anyone have suggestions for a great winter hat for women that will work for temps at 3o degrees?
I have a Seirus Quickdraw which has the face mask which bundles up into the hat, it is made of thick fleece; it is only good for about 55 degrees on me, and this is during the day while I am up and moving. I am looking for something that I can primarily wear in the tent while I am sleeping, so it needs to be extra warm. I ‘sleep’ very cold. It’s not important to me that it be waterproof.
I sleep very cold too! I feel your pain. I have found that adding a wool hat over my fleece (less itchy) works pretty well for me. Be sure and buy it extra large so it comes down over your ears.
A couple of other things that help warm me up are nylon or polyester sock liners and wool socks while I sleep. These need to be different from the ones that I hiked in all day. I leave them in my sleeping bag even when I stuff it in my pack. That way I always have warm, dry socks at night. I can take cold feet all day long, but just let me sleep warm at night.
My best idea for you is to take a Nalgene bottle (or two) and fill with boiling water just before you go to bed. Put the bottle at the end of your bag near your feet. If you have 2 bottles, put the other in the small of your back. You will be amazed at how much that will warm you up at night.
My only other suggestion is that you find a hiking buddy to share your tent. Just having someone else breathing in your tent warms it up several degrees.
