How do you wash a very dirty cat?

Hello.
My Kitty is very dirty because she’s been a backyard cat since we adopted her. Now that summer is coming and it’s gonna get hot, I’m going to have to wash her really really well because she’ll be living inside our clean house. I’ve given her a bath once before but a lot of the dirt on her didn’t really wash of. Is there a very good brand of shampoo that I should use? And please don’t tell me to take her to the groomers, we can’t afford that.

Seriously, though, cats (generally) dislike being given baths. Expect your darling to hiss, scratch and attempt to bite.

Some tips -

Use a sink, put a washcloth at the bottom of the sink so that there is something other than the slippery surface for kitty to stand on (it will make her feel safer).

Avoid getting kitty’s nose wet – it is VERY easy for cats to aspirate (breathe) water into their lungs. I usually will cover my kitty’s head with a second (dry) washcloth while scrubbing her the rest of her body with shampoo (Johnsen and Johnsen baby shampoo is gentle enough to use even on kittens). Covering her eyes helps protect ME from bites and scratches. If you need to wash your kitty’s head, hold her still with one hand and rub a little shampoo in around forhead and cheeks only. Rinse with fingerfuls of water or by using a wettened washcloth.

After kitty’s bath, make sure to dry her out with a towel to remove the majoraty of the water and then with petting. Petting a cat dries her far quicker then a towel!

Again, you don’t need expensive shampoo. Baby shampoo is purr-fect. If you have fleas, you may want to buy a flea shampoo as well, however, the baby shampoo will have killed many of them and then its pretty easy (and soothing for kitty) to run a flea comb through her fur.
