Soft Power Hard Truths / Our future is hybrid here (with Diana Yukawa)
Diana Yukawa, 24, is a violinist whose story is worthy of the film so melodramatic. In 1985 his father died in the crash of Japan Airlines Flight 123 Japanese, the deadliest accident involving a specific aircraft in history. Born a month later, Yukawa was transferred to the home country of his mother in Britain, where he grew up. But she played in her first year at a memorial service Japan for the victims of JAL crash – and was quickly hailed as a prodigy.
I first met about five years ago, Yukawa, when he stopped at my Tokyo office. It seemed remarkable composure and sincere, and I was impressed by his comments and credentials. I have therefore focused attention on his latest album, The Effect butterfly has landed in my mailbox this fall.
Pop and classical music mixes uncomfortable, like most attempts to merge two show. But Yukawa brings a personal perspective on the hybrid: it is also a mixture of two strains.
"I think it's something I have to have luck "Yukawa said earlier this week by telephone from Britain." It's really wonderful that you can exploit and explore further. "
Mariposa has hypnotic rhythms dance club back pain and the violin sometimes leads to another world. Effect sometimes weird techno French musician Jean Michel Jarre filtered through Near East a voice.
It makes sense to Yukawa. "When I write music with [partner] Andy [Wright], it was natural that some of the music seemed very Japanese. It happened organically, This was not something I seek, consciously done. I think it's because I'm very proud of me and fascinated by Japanese culture Japanese comes naturally. "
Hybridization has been the subject of this column since its inception two years ago. Since then, the United States elected its first biracial president, and the influence of Asia continues to grow in the West. Japan-born Heroes star Masi Oka, South Korea, the Star Trek actor John Cho, born in Vietnam, U.S. Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao, Indo-American, Bobby Jindal Louisiana, and the Chinese-American governor Energy Secretary Steven Chu is one of the are always the biggest waves, which may be the reluctance of racial or cultural purists on both sides of the Pacific.
Last May saw the scene before Yukawa 60 000 soccer fans in Qatar a great moment for both the violin and the host country in its bid to host the 2022 World Cup. "It was a game large enough, and I must admit it was not a football fan, "said Yukawa." But when I was there, the atmosphere was incredible. The crowd was intense. When I got off the field, I wanted to go out and play again immediately. And when the game was, was enough to scream and get really into it. "
Passion is difficult to measure, especially when it comes to hybrid forms. As Barack Obama gave his speech accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo last week, many liberal supporters were taken aback by the wording its roots in the thinking of the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, the war on time is needed, and WHO is often far below what we have to be.
In retrospect, 2009 was a year that will probably be remembered as a turning point for these statements, pop and politics. The world is becoming more heterogeneous and malleable, Alaska Patrick Galbraith books offer in otaku (otaku Encyclopedia), Britain's Simon Reynolds gives us immense Rough Guide to Anime and Missouri-born American Jake Adelstein, a former Yomiuri Shimbun reporter, who offers the best view general journalism and Japanese organized crime in his book Tokyo defect.
As for me, being mixed is a mixed blessing. Never comfortable in any land, living in limbo, and half of that half. But perhaps the best place to be as we enter the second decade of the 21st century, where climates are paradigms and changing faster than we can handle.
"This is the first step on a long trip," said Yukawa London. "I can not wait to return to Japan – To see where I go. "
In July, when I had the privilege of interviewing leading Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki in California, I tried to discover the secrets of one of its most iconic, a furry creature called Totoro, Tonari no Totoro of (My Neighbor Totoro).
Some viewers think Totoro is a bear strange. Others think it is a large rodent. What is it? I asked.
"Nature is incomprehensible," Miyazaki said. "I concentrated in his eyes. [Totoro] could be profound thoughts, or anything all. "
Neither here nor there. Get used to it.
