How do you play mp3 music and dvd files on ubuntu (linux)?

I can only play stream files in ubuntu but mp3 files are not supported. how can i play or download the plugins for this type of music files and dvd moive files.

In ubuntu i use xmms media player with almost all of the plugins. the easiest way to get xmms is to go to addremove programs and install xmms. Then go to the synaptic package manager and search for xmms and chose one of the mp3 plugins, install that and you will be ale to play mp3′s

DVD’s are harder than mp3. I searched for a dvd codec in the synaptic package manager and just installed the first one that i saw that the description sounded good on but you wil not be able to play off the shelf movies as they are encrypted and as ubuntu is open source it does not support the codes that dvd’s are encrypted in so it will only play ripped movies or some old budget discs may not be encrypted.
