Pew Penelope

A mother of one of the students I teach asked me how "awake" was his daughter's class at the end of the day school. This is not atypical for an investigation of a young mother, but my "Spidey Sense" was tingling, I ask that question a little more than it was "in its place." Mom said, "Well, I am a friend of Penelope, and I knew she was in her Facebook account last night 11:37 am, so I wondered if she was really conscious at school today … "

For parents who are confused against the reference of the mother is her daughter "friend" simply means that the mother has signed a Facebook account – one of the popular teen social networks make use of these days – and insisted that her daughter was forced to your list of friends through of. "Facebook Features multiple updates are presented to a user on its own page, exactly what all his" friends "are. To what extent have your group of "friends" on the activities in your life is a bit of control, but one of the main features of Facebook and its power networks are a user receives updates on what everyone in your network is "up" in their lives.

In the last five years, networks Socialism has become a phenomenon of teenagers and young adults continues to grow. The Pew Internet & American Life Project reported that 93% of teens use Internet, and December 1, 2007 the survey revealed that 64% of young people aged 12-17 in line participated in one or more of a broad range of creative activities on Internet content, such as sharing creations art, including illustrations, photos, stories and videos, create websites, blogs and online magazines, or maintain their own personal Web pages. 55% of the same age young people have created profiles on social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace, 47% of these young people have taken pictures where others may see, and 14% have posted video online.

The result of this phenomenon has seen several cases in the media young people themselves to put in danger (and sometimes deadly) situations because of their choice in social networking sites. The latter is the case of the mother Lori Drew, accused of posing as a cyber 16 year old with a MySpace page in order to establish a relationship with an old friend of her daughter – a friendship that went wrong. Its trade through this led to a neighbor of 13 years, Megan Meier, hanged herself in a closet after the fictional boy "broke" it. National news is shocking, but appears once more – the use of powerful social networking sites, their potential for abuse and the vulnerability of the adolescent psyche.

As a parent of a child or young person is actively using the web, a good dose of fear is good, as it leads to a rational response to create boundaries, guidelines and personal knowledge about how your child or teen over the Internet. So, here are some basic guidelines you should follow regarding the issue of social networks:

1. Research – Do not know if your child has an account. No, investigate social networks by creating a profile on MySpace or Facebook or the myriad of social networking sites there (many). Get over any aversion you have to use a computer and computers. By creating a legitimate Facebook profile or MySpace, their goal is not to become a teenager again, but to better understand your child and problems in the world today. To do this, you should be familiar with trends and how they spend their time. Remember – you are not trying to show how "with it" or "cool" they are engaging. Try to learn.

2. If you can, try to find a computer (or computer) with Internet access in a central location so you can keep an eye on the pulse of how your child is using this tool. If you can not do that, then agree on what hours the equipment will be used for recreational purposes. You have to be involved and you should contact your teen. Their task as parents is to set limits, be consistent, stay informed. If this product unending conflict in their home, you get out of the equation by buying a device that regulates time on the computer. Just do a browser search for these items. There are several solutions that address the father of the means of regulation of argument!

3. Finally, as the mother of my class, if your child has profiles on MySpace or Facebook – insist that your child is included in your list of friends "to enable consult regularly with intuitive tingling that something can not be "fair." Trust your intuition. Talk often label online. And most importantly, label model.

Fear not – try to stay informed. It is important to consider your teens use the web. Teen Choice should be considered in terms of cause and effect. Your job as parents is to help them learn to question their decisions and predict possible outcomes. The job as a parent is a paradox – easy to summarize, difficult operation – limits consistent, Stay!
