What was the first cartoon and animation work to use rotoscoping?
I know that Ralph Bakshi often used, but also I was curious to know if Dave and Max Fleischer Superman cartoons made by the 1940s.
Fleischer invented rotoscoping and used it to "Koko the Clown "in 1914. A sure sign that rotoscoping has been used in a cartoon to the top is a slightly brighter at the edges of the characters. Many people believe that Prince at the end of Disney's Sleeping Beauty was rotoscope, because I had a similar effect to that seen shining in the Fleischer cartoons. Legal Fleischer, but not the images of a real person moving in such a fasion has never been found in the Disney studios.

The Lord of the Rings (1978 Animated Movie) [Blu-ray] $13.45 Although it was ultimately overshadowed by Peter Jackson’s live-action Lord of the Rings trilogy, Ralph Bakshi’s animated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy classic is not without charms of its own. A target of derision from intolerant fans, this ambitious production is nevertheless a respectably loyal attempt to animate the first half of Tolkien’s trilogy, beginning with the hobbit Frodo… |

Wizards $6.98 Far from the masterful treatment that groundbreaking animator Ralph Bakshi gave the similarly themed The Lord of the Rings just a year later, Wizards feels amateurish. A simplistic distillation of fantasy tropes, the scenario is millions of years after nuclear war wipes out civilization. Middle Earth fairies, elves, and magic emerge from the “good lands,” while dimwitted mutants with poor comic t… |

Wizards (35th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray Book] $23.98 Although Ralph Bakshi’s reputation as a figure in animation history has declined over the years, Wizards (1977) has long enjoyed a cult following. The plot follows a long-prophesied postapocalyptic battle between twin brothers: Blackwolf, an evil sorcerer, and Avatar, a good wizard. Drawn into the conflict are overendowed fairy princess Elinore, elf Weehawk, and Necron 99/Peace (a minion of Blackw… |

Coonskin $7.59 Writer/director Ralph Bakshi’s controversial satire mixes live-action and cartoon footage to follow the odyssey of three rural animals as they make their way through a vice- and crime-ridden ghetto. While attempting to travel to Harlem, Brother Rabbit, Brother Bear, and Preacher Fox experience prejudice while the film comments on race relations in 1970s America. With the voices of Phillip Michael … |

Frazetta Funny Stuff $26.58 Frank Frazetta! He’s been rightfully called “The Grand Master of Fantasy Art”! But, it’s little known that Frazetta also conquered other worlds in the Golden Age of Comics, as shown in his Donald Duck-ish funny animal and hilarious hillbilly comic book stories. Even those aware of this wonderful Frazetta art don’t know the extent – this book is a whopping 256, large-format pages! Did we mention fe… |

Unfiltered: The Complete Ralph Bakshi (The Force Behind Fritz the Cat, Mighty Mouse, Cool World, and The Lord of the Rings) $9.98 On par with auteurs like Walt Disney, Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, and Art Spiegelman, Ralph Bakshi redefined animation and became a hero to countless generations of fans and filmmakers. If Disney?s life and work evoke images of chaste princesses in gleaming castles, Bakshi?s is a lady of ill repute camped out in a dim back alley. His name is synonymous with the great tradition of American cartooning. … |
