Sew a doll?

I have to make a doll to school. I went to the Army and picked up some Hi baby clothes for the doll (to be about two feet, I should say). However, the description said I wanted the body shape. I'm just going to sew the fabric, color, and then stuffing and dressing. I am a beginner sewing machine did not. So my question, if I have to sew the doll in one piece? Can he sit, or Weird Al? Advice?
