Teens and technical careers
The iPod generation of children and teenagers are by far the most sophisticated technology to date.
During my adolescence, through the mid-eighties in India, which had almost no access to computers. I took a computer course in 1987, during which the instructor gave us "demos" on a real machine once a week and never really been programmed in a PC. Instead, we have written algorithms and pseudo-code, and was tested in the logic of our programs.
During my recent trip to India, visited a village school that my great-great-great-grandfather had established in our ancestral village in Rajarhat, near Calcutta, where he grew up. The director-teacher took us around and explained that with 10 computers, and students learn on 8 data structures, algorithms and programs written in C. I was impressed and fascinated by how far the fabric of India – has made its way. In this case the vehicle for this realization is an educational outreach program from IBM.
In the U.S., of course, we have a generation raised on computers to affluenza age 3 or 4.
There is therefore somewhat disappointing to read this post by Laura Tiffany, on the preferences of the careers of today's teens:
"The teens surveyed believe that innovation deals with issues such as drinking water (91 percent), hunger (89 percent), disease (88 percent), reducing pollution (89 percent) and energy conservation (82 percent). They also believe that the CD and gasoline are at their output, 33 percent think gasoline that cars will be gone by 2015 and the CD will be history within 10 years. But when asked about future career options, the science, business and engineering have not been at the top of the list. The honors went to the arts and medicine (17 percent each), careers were health-care/medicine more attractive to girls than boys (25 percent vs. 9 percent). Genius will rank third at 14 percent, with the greatest difference between boys and girls (24 and 4 percent respectively). "
Well, the numbers are very different in India and China. The United States, then, leaving the Asian invent and innovate?
