Turtles Animation
Was 80′s animation a golden age of cartoons?

Do you think 80′s cartoons was a golden age?
Transformers, G.I. Joe, He-Man, Thundercats, MASK, Muppet Babies, Go-Bots, Ninja Turtles.. many others.. what were your favorites?
yes, I know they were mostly commercials for toys, but some of them had good story lines, don’t you think?

The 80′s were like the cartoon renaissance, the animation was much better than the 70′s stuff and they had way more freedom and a lot less censorship than the 90′s. Yes, some cartoons were made to advertise toys but Saturday used to be about entertaining kids. Today it’s all about selling the latest fad from Japan or showing some badly animated crazy style hip talking animal or kid made by some dude in a ponytail.
I can see from old vhs tapes that recorded an entire network’s Saturday line-up that it wasn’t about what’s in or what’s selling, it was about ideas and entertainment. Little Wizards, Flintstone Kids, Garfield & Friends, those were entertaining shows with self-contained stories and no commercial ties. Shows based on licenses like Ghostbusters and Transformers are memorable because they,re appealing without the toys or movie they’re based on.
They were also able to get away with a lot. Modern Transformers series are so LAME because they have to drag out stories and substitute the fighting with talk and they make you tune in, hardly any stand alone stories with more dialogue than action (Unicron Trilogy anyone?)
The early Ninja Turtle episodes also showed lots of weapon use, mostly on robots but it was still some good active combat. Turtles survived into the 90′s and made the transition into buzz-kill censorship when Michelangelo’s nunchucks were replaced by a *ugh* turtle hook but it was still a good show that lasted 9 years.
I like the old stuff they show on the retro channel, Thundercats, G.I.Joe, Inspector Gadget, and the stuff on the Toon channel like Teddy Ruxpin. I can see how kids were drawn in by those show’s timeless appeal. They were written to be entertaining for the children with or without the merchandise

I miss Astroboy :( that was my favorite
